Does anyone know the UK variant of this:
mine brownfields (US), near-mine sites, etc. or some other?

Yes, a little bit of context please Depending on the context it might work to simply use "polluted site". Maybe there is some additional context to help with finding the best solution? As you can tell from the submitted responses there is room for interpretation with this German term.

More context would help As always, it's difficult to get the translation right on the basis of a single word - it's useful to see the whole sentence or paragraph.

contaminated mining sites

Is what is used by BGR, the German Federal geological survey, for example. Plain and simple, although I might insert "former" to make "contaminated former mining sites". It does get a small number of hits in Goggle, but some of them are German sites. This is a more specific answer than legacy pollution.

legacy pollution (or contamination)

This usually means "left-over" bad stuff that needs fixing
Hence "legacy" and/or "pollution"
In the right negative conext, "legagcy" might work as well.
"legacy pollution" is a common term if you search fo it.
