: It renders the meaning, but it is not what the text says. "Specie assente dall'Italia come nidificante" means "a species that has been absent from Italy, as a nest-maker"

It was a personal, stylistic choice to diverge slightly from the text. What matters, as you say, is to render the meaning - and the meaning here is that the white stork is still present in Italy, only not as a nesting bird.
