English term

middle childhood

English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Dear colleagues, I was wondering whether “middle childhood” might mean "school-age children" in the context below (the preceding sentence refers to “preschool peers", so I thought "school-age" might be right here)
. According to some texts, middle childhood is the age between 6 and 12, but there doesn’t seem to be complete agreement… The text below is American English.
Thank you very much for your help!

Yvonne, thank you so much for your contribution!
Yvonne Gallagher Oct 29, 2019:
@ haribert reiterating re age brackets that are split in terms of school ages, i.e. pre-school, 0-5/6, primary 5/6-12 and second level/high school teenage years 13-18/19. The main cohort of kids will be in those age brackets in the entire English-speaking world for their school/childhood years. There may be slight variations at the borders between age groups, but, in general, they work

Hi, Jccantrell! Thank you for your message! Actually, I think Yvonne has posted useful links in this regard, although I've sometimes found that not all sources agree on the age bracket..
jccantrell Oct 29, 2019:
In California, we have 'middle school' defined as:
In California, a child must be five years old BEFORE September 1 in order to enroll in kindergarten. Elementary school is kindergarten through 5th grade (ages 5-10), middle school is grades 6-8 (ages 11-13), and high school is grades 9-12 (ages 14-18).

So, my first thought would be those ages, when kids are in middle school.

I think you can trust government sources to define the age group this refers to

Many thanks:-)
agree philgoddard : This is not set in stone - it's vague, like "middle age". But 6-12 is about right in my opinion.

Many thanks:-)
agree Cilian O'Tuama : There or thereabouts (though punctuation/hyphenation would need serious tweaking, but that's not the issue here)

Thanks! I'd avoid multiple hyphens by rephrasing (like in links) as "ages/years/range/group 6-12" or "children in the 6-12 age group" etc. It's being translated FROM English anyway
agree Tina Vonhof (X) : It fits in the three groups asker mentions.
