French term
coexistence bien accompagnée
French to English
Other
Agriculture
Genetically modified crops
This is in the opinion published by a scientific institute on authorising the cultivation of a genetically modified plant:
"...le progrès dans la conception de cette plante transgénique ... pourrait permettre de réexpérimenter une coexistence bien accompagnée entre une culture PGM et les cultures conventionnelles ou biologiques."
where PGM stands for a genetically modified plant.
The coexistence issue is clear. My problem is with "bien accompagnée"

: I'm not saying you're wrong, but sometimes French distinguishes between "bien accompagné" et "bien suivi" (subtle difference). See Discussion Area. Have a nice day.

well-supported coexistence (not exactly the same thing as "well-monitored)
Hello,
I've been doing lots of research on this, and it seems like this may be more "well-maintained" rather than "well-monitored", even though they are closely related words semantically-speaking.
If you google, you'll see that "bien accompagné et suivi" occur at times, making me wonder what the best translation is since "suivi" is more "monitored."
I'm not knit-picking because precise language in these sorts of contexts is everything.

: Matthew, accompagné in your references is in a totally different context. I don't think "well-supported" applies to plants, unless they are tied to a stake.

Hello. I mean "well-maintained" when I said "well-supported". No, my refs don't refer to plants, but I was just making the idea that "bien accompagné" may not always be best trnaslated "monitored", as they'll sometimes use "bien suivi" in addition.

well-maintained coexistence
Hello,
I think this is closer than "well-monitored".
I think this is closer than "well-monitored".
Discussion
I think there is a bit of a difference between "well-maintained" and "well-monitored", but I'm no expert in the field.
It was a good question.
I was meaning "well taken care of" (looked after) for "bien accompagnée", but that could mean "well-monitored", I suppose. I was just worried about precision here, considering the nature of your text. And as I already mentioned, French will make a "slight" distinction between "well-supported" and "well-monitored" at times, sometimes to be redundant rather than with a real semantic reason -- but you never know!) . I've seen examples where a difference warrants a distinction to be made in the translation.
Have a great day.
plantes bien accompagnées et suivies (in lab studies, etc)
Any thoughts...
