I even have a booklet from Mount Holyoke College where I studied in 1992-3 with a choice of extra-curricular lectures about all kind of subjects. Also, lecture sounds less German than seminar, now that I think.

: I think it depends on the form of the events. In the UK, a "lecture" is an event at which a professor talks "at" a (larger) group of students, often with little/no interaction with them. Outside a university, a"lecture" is a talk with little interaction.
