Thank you all for the excellent suggestions and even more interesting discussion of the subtle differences.
I am sure I will be able to use these suggestions pretty soon.
Have a nice week.!
Bett (asker) May 5, 2008:

agree isarcat : This (either pushed out or ousted) is by far the best alternative. Trust us.

i was thrown out

algo mais informal

embora a sua ideia de "forced to step down" me parece uma excelente opcao

I was kicked out/fired

"Fired" would apply if the person was an employee; it's a bit unclear from the context exactly what his position was.

agree Gilmar Fernandes : Sure! There may be other variations, but this is pretty standard and well know in the U.S.

Thank you, Gilmar!
disagree Michele Fauble : To "out someone" means to reveal something about the person that he or she did not want others to know./Maybe you meant 'ousted'?/Yes, many Google hits, and they, like all your references, confirm the definition I have provided.

How do you fit your definition in the examples I brought?
neutral isarcat : I have to agree with Michele. I'm thinking you prob. meant "ousted."

didn't someone mention this as part of their answer? After agreeing with "thrown out" I thought this could be more nuanced, as " eu fui saido" is somewhat nuanced, yet informal.
