prescription

English to Arabic Medical Medical (general) medical
Dear all,

What is the best Arabic equivalent for "prescription" in the following context:

"he has diabetes, he come every month to pick up his prescription."

يأتي ليأخذ وصفته الدوائية؟
Is that it? If so, doeas it mean that every month he takes new medicine? bec. iti doesn't make sense to me!

Thanks a lot.

Mujdey Abudalbuh Jan 15, 2011:
Guys.. "prescription" here does NOT mean the paper thing; it refers to the medication itself. Upon your medical visit/appointment, the doctor asks you whether you would like to get the paper prescription yourself or that you prefer that s/he sends it immediately to your designated/preferred pharmacy. If you go for the latter option, the pharmacy calls you once your prescription drug/medication is ready to pick up. In many U.S. pharmacies, you can pick up your prescription via the drive though. An ID may be required. This is why the patient may have to go and pick their prescription on a regular basis (monthly refills, for example). The phrase "pick up prescription" is only used in the context of pharmacy.

the word we use in Egypt روشتة derives from the Italian word "ricetta" pronounced "richetta", which means "prescription".

"pick up a prescription" does not mean to pick up the paper thing, but the medication itself. In many cases, at least in USA, the doctor sends the paper prescription directly to your designated pharmacy. Upon their call, you go and pick up your prescription (i.e., medication), mostly through the pharmacy's drive though. You may be required to present an ID. The other option is to take your prescription from the doctor at the day of your medical visit.
Peer comment(s):

agree Arabic & More : Exactly...he gets his prescribed medicine every month from the pharmacy (not the paper the doctor wrote on).
