Da Inglese a Italiano Tecnico/Meccanico Computer: Software HTML coding, web design

as in: "HTML tags", "the div tag", "copy text within tags"

I know it's left in English (in that context of HTML), my question is: in Italian, should it be referred to as "la/le tag" (feminine) or "il/i tag" (masculine)?

I checked some online sources, and the top ones for the field - the W3 ( http://www.w3.org ) and Macromedia - do use the masculine for "tag" in Italian translations. But I've also found references that use it in the feminine. So it shouldn't be a problem either way, but I was just curious to hear what other translators think.

Feminine? Masculine? (why oh why don't we also have a neutral like in German ;) )

Now, for some reason I cannot explain, to me the feminine sounds more appropriate. I don't know why, it just seems to sound better to say "la/le tag" than "il/i tag". So I would personally prefer to use feminine articles, but if both W3 and Macromedia think otherwise, well... maybe I should use the masculine?

What do you think? Is there a general rule in Italian grammar for this sort of thing that I'm not aware of? a default gender for relatively "new" foreign words whose gender is not already defined by longer and more traditional use? or is it just left to individual preference?

This is one of those things in translating that sometimes boggles me... :)
