I meant to mention that my perspective is USA/American English.
A high school diploma is a diploma awarded for the completion of high school.

: "brevet d'études" is obtained around the age of 14, which is younger than that at the end of high school

Junior Certificate/GCSE or Junior High School Completion Certificate
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_school French secondary education is divided into two schools: ... The Brevet des collèges is the first official diploma a pupil has to sit
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_in_France - Cached
For a US reader, there is no diploma equivalent
prior to attending High School, many children in the United States attend a middle school or a junior high school (comprosing of grades 5-6, 5-8, 5-9, 6-8, 6-9, 7-8, 7-9 or 8-9)...
In the United States a high school is an upper secondary school which educates children from grade nine through grade twelve,[5] in other words, from the age of 14 or 15 to 17 or 18 (in some states, such as California, some students begin the ninth grade at age 13)...
At end of High School there is a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate
the Brevet is usually at the end of what might be called Junior High school in the US so there is no certificate equivalent
perhaps Junior High School Completion Certificate as I've suggested would get message across

: Nothing in "Brevet d'études" says we are talking about the "brevet des collèges" and not about studies other than middleschool.

French term or phrase: brevet d'études du 1er cycle du second degré
This is the title of the diploma. I think this is simply a Certificate of Graduation from Middle School (or Junior High School), but what about the "second degré"? Does that change the meaning at all?

English translation:General certificate of Secondary Education
Explanation:
This would be the equivalent in England. I don't think "second degré" means anything particular.
Fuller context is required in your posting:)
