German term

Sanitätspolizeiliche Obduktion

German to English Medical Medical (general)
A basic question on the differentiation of autopsy types:
Is the above a 'coroner's/forensic autopsy' or a 'clinical autopsy'?

Context: AUSTRIAN autopsy report

Thanks a lot!
Proposed translations (English)

Discussion

Susanne Ofner Oct 9, 2013:
Autopsy by health officials is what I'd suggest. A "sanitätspolizeiliche" Leichenöffnung has to be distinguished from a forensic one. They have different routines and procedures. I know this for a fact as I'm translating on the differences between the two. "Sanitätspolizei" is part of the health authorities.
Lirka (asker) Dec 30, 2009:
I would tend to agree with Susanne, that forensic autopsy more closely corresponds to gerichtliche Obd.
How about coroner's autopsy? Is there a difference b/w forensic and coroner's autopsy? IF there is one, then it may be suitable.

its a coroners, involving the police , rather than eg a hospitals' own.

forensic autopsy

According to my research, you are correct in your first assumption. Sanitaetspolizei appears to generally be seen as the coroner's departmen - in charge of "public" health/medicine affairs Although also attributed to Germany, the term is more prevalent in Switzerland and Austria.

Also designated as the emergency medicine police division.

neutral Susanne Schiewe : this would be 'gerichtliche Obduktion', I think. But there is obviously a difference between the two; see my reference

Scheint mir ein bisschen so wie das, was in das Aufgabengebiet unserer Gesundheitsämter fällt.

"...the Sanitätspolizei is not a police force."

The Sanitätspolizei Bern (English: Berne Medical Police) is the emergency medical service for Berne, Switzerland, and 40 surrounding municipalities with a total of 310,000 inhabitants.[1] Despite its name, which dates to the time when it was part of the municipal police, the Sanitätspolizei is not a police force.[1]

The Sanitätspolizei is part of the municipal administration of Berne, attached to the Department of Security, Environment and Energy. It is a fully professional organization with 150 employees, operating from a central barracks on Waisenhausplatz in the Old City of Berne.[1] Due to overcrowding, it is scheduled to relocate to a new headquarters in 2013.[2][3]

In addition to its emergency service, the Sanitätspolizei operates the medical emergency telephone number service (phone no. 144) for the canton of Berne, provides command and control in major emergencies and provides medical training to police and other emergency forces.[1]

Am thinking aloud here:
For all we know, the term may not denote a type of autopsy, but mean 'an autopsy conducted by the Sanitätspolizei'.
