Comment: "Well, thanks to all 8 answerers on this - and I thought it was a dumb question. I liked Robert's 'reduced' and Deborah's 'evened out' but finally decided to give points for David's 'has made distance less of a factor' because in the end, I used 'has made distances less important'.

I mean, the equivalent of a the phrase could vary in style depending on the field of the context, that is, many of the phrases gien above are quite accurate but we should select them if the text is technical as it requires a straighter translation
