Tried that but didn't work Apr 19, 2007

Hi Chance,

I tried that method just now but it didn't work. My Yahoo Messenger was working fine this morning and it just suddenly stopped working. My Norton is just a trial version. I don't really intend to buy it after the trial period. What firewall programme are you using? Like I said, I have been using Zone Alarm, but it is incompatible with Vista.

Denyce

Here comes the next problem: my Yahoo Messenger refuses to log in. I don't know what happened because there is no error message. Could it be caused by the firewall??

Right click on the Yahoo Messenger icon, then choose Run as administrator.

I solved most of the problems in Windows Vista by using this method.

It works but... Apr 20, 2007

Xuchun,

Your method works!!!! However... the Yahoo Messenger screen keeps popping up. Whenever I try to type, the screen pops up! When I type "t", it jumps to the first name that starts with "t" in my contact list.

Chinese typing software Apr 20, 2007

Xuchun,

What Chinese typing software do you use in Vista? I am using Google Pinyin now, but it is not that user-friendly. It keeps switching between Chinese and English keyboards (I am used to German keyboard).

http://www.phoenixsoftware.co.za/Products/GDataSecurity.asp

Run IE7.0 as Administator Apr 20, 2007

Hi, Denyce.

Microsoft Pinyin is compatible with IE in Vista. I use 极品五笔 mot of the time in Vista. But it's not compatible with IE. So I have to resort to Microsoft Pinyin. But I found that when I run IE as Administrator, I can use 极品五笔 in IE!

However, I cannot install the 繁体五笔 software on Vista, so I have to reboot the computer to XP in order to work on CT jobs.

What is it with this "run as administrator" thing? We don't have this in earlier versions of Windows, do we?

You have to add the Chinese keyboard and input methods from Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options -> Keyboard and Languages. Then you can choose them.

This is something new with Vista. It helps to prevent unauthorised software from installing or running automatically without the explicit consent of an administrator. Here is the explanation:

The most important rule for controlling access to resources is to provide the least amount of access required for a user to perform his or her necessary tasks. Many of these tasks do not require administrator privileges. However, because previous versions of Windows created all users as administrators by default, many users have always logged on to their computers with an administrator account. When a user is an administrator, without User Account Control (UAC) that user is automatically granted full access to all system resources.

However, most users do not require such a high level of access to the computer. Many users are even unaware that they are an administrator, and they browse the Web, check e-mail, and run software throughout the day as an administrator.

Additionally, while running as an administrator enables a user to install legitimate software, the user can also unintentionally or intentionally install a malicious program. A malicious program installed by an administrator can fully compromise the computer and affect all users.

In this version of Windows, the access control model has changed to help mitigate the impact of a malicious program. The User Account Control message asks the user to click either Continue or Cancel when trying to start an administrator application before it can use the user’s full administrator access token. (If the user is not an administrator, the user must provide an administrator's credentials to run the program).

Because UAC requires an administrator to approve application installations, unauthorized applications cannot be installed automatically or without the explicit consent of an administrator.

I tried but it didn't allow me to select Chinese. Anyway, I am trying to get used to Google Pinyin. Hopefully I can find something better soon.

Thanks for the info in UAC. It is such a shame. IT advancement should make our life easier, but now it seems to go the other direction.

Thanks for all the help, here. Have a nice weekend, everyone!

Denyce
