Thanks to everyone for all the interesting suggestions :-)
Rachel Fell (asker) Aug 3, 2008:
Sorry, 70 years ago - and not about the Mafia but politics; subtitles for a film, BTW
Rachel Fell (asker) Aug 3, 2008:
Thanks for all your help. It's set in Sicily about 60 years ago.
Milena Bosco (X) Aug 3, 2008:
Rachel, I think one of the answers is the closest, but have a look at this old entry, I think that this is the exact nuance you might find useful in your translation : http://www.proz.com/kudoz/italian_to_english/art_literary/14...

smart persons, crafty persons.

Note from asker:
Thank you Giovanni - so for non-Sicilians "uomini di pancia" is understood as meaning furboni, crafty, etc.?
Sorry, can't think of a better glossary entry at the moment - used something else for my context

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks Giovanni, have to go with a Sicilian here,as whole thing is set there ;-) - the key thing was about secrecy and having to be careful who heard one's views."

big shots

Just an instinctive guess. 'How come they're acting like big shots with us?'
Note from asker:
Thanks Simon - also sounds good; scene is set in Sicily BTW
Thanks Simon - think this is closest for my p'tic. usage - thinking of "Are they cutting us out now?" - the people are friends but times are difficult. + It's subtitling.

mafiosi

http://tinyurl.com/67jss2

I'd keep "mafiosi" in Italian. Everyone knows what a "mafioso" is :)

Yeah Rachel, sorry about the dead link, this supposedly clever TinyURL FIrefox add-on doesn't seem to be working too well. I'll de-activate it !
Note from asker:
Thank s Tom! BTW, for some reason your link didn't work, but I found the page by copying a bit of the text from it

http://www.fossatoionico.it/dizionario/p.php
