Italian term

a peso

Italian to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature Story for teenagers
not seen this before, could it be some kind of idiom, or did I miss something?

Stremati dal freddo, fatica e fame, N e i suoi genitori furono caricati sul motoscafo a peso, insieme ad altre anime in pena scappate per miraculo alla furia del mare e all'incuria di uomini senza scrupoli.

bodily

I think "a peso" is a typo, it should be "di peso": "... were lifted bodily on the motorboat"

agree SYLVY75 : yes, this is the meaning of the original sentence.

neutral Lara Barnett : This could be quite accurate as a literal translation, but it still seems a bit unnecessary to use this here in the English as we don't often use it in descriptions like this.

agree Rosanna Palermo : "a/di peso" = dead weight

neutral giuseppina franich : di sicuro è sbagliato l'ialiano 'peso'

agree Margaret Wood : "di peso" - actually lifted on as opposed to climbing aboard (after all, they were exhausted!)

packed like sardines

Hi Charles,

not many Ghits; this is the idea I get from your context and from current events of refugees arriving in Sicily by boat.

Just a guess, as my confidence level shows :-)

Found this... "caricati a peso d'oro":
"Il fenomeno dei clandestini scaricati dai tir, è sempre più preoccupante in quanto è chiaro che nasconde un traffico di disperati caricati a peso d'oro per raggiungere il nostro paese e proseguire poi verso nord."
