Apr 28, 2005 19:52: ahmadwadan.com changed "Level" from "Non-PRO" to "PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (2): Nesrin, ahmadwadan.com

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Further to Mohamed\'s comment, \"directory\" and \"folder\" might be synonymous only in GUI environments. In a shell or command-line environment, the notion of a folder does not exist.
Peer comment(s):

agree Alaa Zeineldine : Agree with your answer and your additional note. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folder. But please note that KudoZ etiquette dicourages one answerer disagreeing with another. It is generally better to let your answer and comments argue for themselves.

Sorry, I was unaware of that, because it's not mentioned in the rules. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I will be more careful in the future in shaa Allah.

After reading Hazem\'s note, I just want to add that he was right in a way...directory actually is related to command line OSs (like MS-DOS), but folder is the equivalent in the GUI OSs (like Windows), but my argue is there is nothing in the text clarifies whether it is on or the other, so I think we can use the both terms safely.

Many thanks Sabri
neutral Alaa Zeineldine : Folder and directory are indeed synonyms in this context, specially when referring to file and directory permissions. However, each synonym has a corresponding Arabic term, so it is better to use the corresponding Arabic synonym for each.// See note above

Thank you Alaa, but if the tow terms are used as synonyms, why don't we use the simpler and more readable for the targeted reader?

Comment - not for grading

Mohamed asked a very good question. If folder and directory are synonyms, why not use the translation that would suit the audience?

Because there are two translations available in Arabic, namely مجلد and دليل, which are provided to suit the respective audiences of the terms folder and directory (for example GUI v. shell users). Check the Microsoft glossaries for each term, to see what I mean. You can use the following simple lookup tool below to look up folder and directory and see the result. You can also look up "directory permissions".

http://expertwell.com/cgi-bin/glossary.cgi

That is not to say that using folder is totally incorrect, but following the accepted convention is preferable and poses a smaller risk of an error in context.

neutral Mohamed Elsayed : Dear Alaa, just in case you didn't notice, but my answer offered the 2 choices.
