to show oneself (to be) good, bad, etc проявить себя с хорошей, плохой и т. п. стороны

to show oneself (to be) smb. проявить себя кем-л., оказаться кем-л.
to show oneself a gentleman [a coward] — оказаться настоящим джентльменом [трусом]
to show oneself a great actor — показать себя большим артистом

Насчет to approve oneself — трехтомник Апресяна дает такой пример: зарекомендовать себя, проявить себя (с положительной стороны) (см. approve1)

he acquitted himself well in battle — он хорошо проявил себя в бою (см. acquit)

to approve oneself — зарекомендовать себя, проявить себя (с положительной стороны) (см. approve1)
