I have always known this word to mean "dishwasher" in EN but now I have a sentence like: "¿Hasta que punto es apropiada esta fragancia para un lavavajillas de lavado a mano?" It does not make sense to have a "lavavajillas de lavado a mano" or a 'dishwasher for washing by hand'???
Or am I missing something?

Hola, si se refieren al detergente, supongo que es porque el producto que se usa para lavar a mano NO es el mismo que para la máquina.
Los productos para lavar a máquina se fabrican especialmente para esto. Los de lavar a mano me parece que son más espesos, incluso se usan cremas, cosa que no puede usarse en las máquinas.

Oh! I know! Machines use POWDERED detergents! That\'s why they make the difference.
I suppose \"dishwashing liquid\" is ok to mean the wash-by-hand kind...
