German term

Dachstuhl

German to English Art/Literary
WWII
An apartment building has been hit during the night.

Nur ein riesiger Schutthaufen war geblieben. Der Dachstuhl brannte noch.

What is more common in US English – rafters or roof truss?
Since this is a literary text I don’t want it to sound too technical either.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

rafters

Normally I would say attic but if only a riesiger Schutthaufen remains, and the choice is truly between rafters and roof truss, I would definitely say rafters.

the woodwork of the roof

the woodwork of the roof was still burning

agree Michele Johnson : also a possibility

neutral Maureen Holm, J.D., LL.M. : 'woodwork' to me means only and specifically the finish that runs between wall and floor.

not that it matters much, as the selection has been made, but Langenscheidt is usually a good credential, would you not think so?

room frame

truss

http://dict.leo.org/search=Dachstuhl&searchLoc=0&relink=on&s...

other options in constuction could be Ridge board of gable (type of roof)
Peer comment(s):

disagree Kim Metzger : Wrong register. She's not looking for construction terminology but the remains of a burned out building in a literary context.

I hate to inform you, but rafters is a just as much a construction term, and by no means any more literary. Please do inform yourself on these matters!
