Spanish term

Facultad de Filosofía y Letras

Spanish to English Other Education / Pedagogy Name of institution
I'm embarrassed to say I'm not sure how to translate this (or even if I should do so) even though it's where Borges taught his university students right here in Buenos Aires. 'Faculty' says something different to me, I'm happier with 'School', but I've seen both. And then: Letters/Literature/Arts... It's in a passage about Alejandra Pizarnik.

Does anyone know for sure? I've looked for university web-pages in English, but they use the Spanish name. Perhaps that should tell me something!

Thanks to everyone in advance

Discussion

Silvia Hanine-Studnicki Jan 31, 2010:
I would leave it in Spanish and only the first time would write, in brackets, School of Philosophy and Literature (not faculty, which means something else).
Christine Walsh (asker) Jan 31, 2010:
The article (and several others) will be published both in Spanish and in English, within the same book but not on facing pages. As it's published in the US by an American university, the English version goes first. This practice is more common than one would think. Thanks for your interest!
Untranslated or bilingual As you say,
1. "This is for a bilingual book series published by the Latin American studies program of a US university."
2. "Most of the readers are likely to have a more-than-nodding acquaintance with Spanish, and some knowledge of Buenos Aires and its academic institutions."

Evelyn Dench Jan 31, 2010:
Faculty/School/Department Desde este lado del Atlantico (UK) la versión más aceptada sería Department of Philosophy.

Christine Walsh (asker) Jan 31, 2010:
This is what Rubén Vela writes about his meetings with the young Pizarnik:

Aventura insospechada era verla recomponer en poemas esos fragmentos escritos en papelitos imposibles, sentada en una mesa de café cercano a la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras.
Bilingual expression Facultad de Filosofía y Letras (Philosophy and Arts Faculty)

So far Let me tell you what I've done up to now: left it in Spanish and put Faculty of Arts in round brackets. I'll post a part of the passage.

School of Philosophy and Literature

If I believed that it should be translated, that is what I would say. At least it conveys the meaning.

agree Silvia Killian Özler : School for sure. I would change Literature to Humanities, because that is mainly what it is taught there, not just literature.

Hope this helps!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faculty_of_Philosophy_and_Liter...

The Faculty of Philosophy and Literature (Spanish: Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, or FFyL) at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) is responsible for administering 11 humanism and science based majors; it has both Undergraduate and Graduate studies. It is one of the biggest and most renowned literature faculties in the Spanish-speaking world. It is the Alma Mater of Nobel Prize Octavio Paz and a number of other important characters in the Latin American literature.

Different changes in Europe led to a transformation of the conceptions about scientific research in Argentina - as well as in the rest of the world- which were reflected in the University. There was a clash - specially seen in the Medicine and Law Schools -between the conceptions of a University focused on the professional development and a University concentrated on scientific research. By the end of XIX several museums and research centres were created: the Pathology Institute (1887), the Ethnographic Museum of the Faculty of Philosophy and Literature (1904), among others.

Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities

This appears to be one of those with multiple translations/variations, and often "Letras" on various sites has been translated as "Letters" - an incorrect translation, IMO, as it means nothing!

Re: Facultad de Filosofía y Letras
As a second-generation U.S. academic, I will try to clarify this further. I have studied at the Facultad de Filosofía y Letras of the Complutense in Madrid, and studied/taught at a number of universities in California and New York.

This does not refer to a group of buildings, a group of professors, or an individual department. That is why we call it a 'School', or in some places a 'College'. The School of Philosophy and Letters could also be called the School of Humanities. It is one of the principal divisions of a university. There may also be a School of Business, a School of Social Sciences, a School of Music (or Arts and Music), and a School of Math and Sciences. There are slight differences in the way things are named and classified from university to university. In some universities, a person might major in Letters, or Humanities, or Sciences, but in most cases — at least in the U.S. — the degree will be in one of the disciplines within the school.

HTH!

Thank you Silvia. From a British perspective, I personally don't see the problem with Faculty. Our Universities here are made of Faculties and within that Depts. The concept is quite clear to me. Un abrazo.
