Discussion

Tom in London Feb 9, 2009:
incorrect "Da Vinci" is widely used, mainly by Americans I think, but is incorrect. That wasn't his surname. Vinci is where he was from.
James (Jim) Davis Feb 9, 2009:
To translate or not to translate If you put yourself in the shoes of a person who wants to know, but doesn't speak Italian, then the answer is clear. Normally you don't translate proper nouns, unless there is a standard accepted translated version as in the "last supper", but to apply this to the canals (each of which have their own proper nouns) which Da Vinci designed as an engineer is extending this a bit far.
BrigitteHilgner Feb 9, 2009:
You should at least explain what it means - I guess this refers to the exhibition.

Leonardo's Navigli

From the school of take nothing for granted ... I'd translate this time, because it refers to a specific context and there are reliable traces on English google.

Should add that I'd hang on to "Navigli" because of the connection to the Milan waterways.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I chose this answer in the end. Because of where it's going to be published, I imagine the users would at least have an idea of what the Navigli are so I didn't add anything afterwards in brackets. Thanks to all!"
