: Can't say no,but IMO"tip off" doesn't fit as well as it suggests something like a hint, which the person would have to further investigate on their own. I think in this context, there isn't much opportunity for that, which is why I chose "inform" instead.

Thanks! Anyway, reporters have to further investigate. My consideration is on the style appropriateness. The original term is succinct and lively too. This is why I used this term.
